CARNEGIE LIBRARY Built in 1914, this is one of a series of libraries built across the country by the Carnegie family. It is located in historic downtown at 502 N. Queen.

DAVEY DOGWOOD PARK More than 200 acres of picturesque rolling hills, clear flowing streams, forests and meadows. Picnic areas and scenic overlooks from paved roads wind throughout the park. It is a featured area during the annual Texas Dogwood Trails Festival from late March to early April. It is located just north of Palestine on N. EILENBERGER'S BUTTERNUT BAKING COMPANY Famous since 1898 for fruit cakes baked from an Old World recipe, not to mention their pies, cakes and specialty items. You will find them at 512 N. John St. 903/729-2253.

PILGRIM CHURCH This authentic reconstruction of the original 1833 house of worship, is said to be the first Protestant church in Texas. Drive four miles south of Elkhart on F.M. 861 (not shown on most maps).

SCIENTIFIC BALLOON BASE Operated by NASA, balloons as large as 300 feet in diameter are periodically launched to make studies of upper atmosphere and outer space. Tours may be arranged through the public relations officer at the base by calling 903/729-0271.

ENGELING WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA This is an 11,000 acre wildlife habitat with deer, fox, wolves, squirrels, rabbits, alligators, coyotes and bountiful birds. Located north of U.S. 287, 20 miles northwest, they offer fishing and day-use campsites.

HOWARD HOUSE MUSEUM Built in 1851 by Col. George Howard, it holds a collection from early pioneer days. Please call for an appointment. 903-584-3225 1011 N. Perry St.

MUSEUM FOR EAST TEXAS CULTURE Rooms in the old (1915) schoolhouse display artifacts and special interest exhibits. There is an authentic vintage classroom, a railroad memorabilia room and a refurbished caboose. It is a recorded Texas Historic Landmark and listed on the national Register of Historic Places. Open Tues.-Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun. 1-4 p.m. Admission (free Tues.) It is located in Reagan Park, 400 Micheaux Ave. 903/723-1914.

PALESTINE COMMUNITY FOREST There are seven hundred acres of pines and hardwoods with scenic drives leading to four lakes with fishing, boating, and picnicking. Sumac, yaupon and sweetgum trees add accents of brilliant color during autumn. Take Texas 19/U.S. 287 a few miles northwest of Palestine.

TEXAS STATE RAILROAD Operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. the antique steam engines and cars traverse the 25.5 mile route to Rusk through dense East Texas woodlands. It operates weekends March through May, then daily (except Tuesdays  and Wednesdays) through the first of August; then weekends through October. Reservations are advisable. On display is the huge locomotive 610 that was restored to pull the Bicentennial Freedom Train in 1976, an 1899 wooden T&P business car and an old baggage car. The terminal is at the state park four miles east on U.S. 84. There is a fee for the train ride.
