Sherman, "land of lures and legends," was a popular stop along the Marcy's Butterfield Trail in the 1840's .Today, just one hour north of Dallas on Hwy . 75, Sherman is popular for historic sites, special events and diverse cultural opportunity. The Finley Cultural Center and Theatricks Playhouse present live theater for adults and children. The Sherman Community Series features the regional orchestra and entertainers. The Lakefest Regatta and, the Historical Home Tour precede fishing tournaments, an Independence Day Celebration and the Grayson County Fair. In the Fall, the Red River Valley Arts Festival and 5K run, U.S. National Aerobic Competition, Altrusa Pilgrimage of Homes and Jaycees Christmas Parade round out the year. Austin College, one of the oldest and finest liberal arts schools in the nation, features fountains, an unusual solstice calendar and other outdoor sculptures, and a notable library with a rare copy of the Book of Kells. Tours are available at the 100-year-old C.S. Roberts House, the Red River Historical Museum, the Museum of American Victorian Furniture and Grayson County Frontier Village. Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and the Harber Wildlife Exhibit attract nature buffs. Antique shops, Midway Mall, Super WalMart and K-Mart Centers and a wide range of cafes, restaurants and motels make it easy to stay awhile. |
